I photographed this magnificent black Arabian stallion called “Al-Afdal الأفضل" at an horse breeding centre in Saudi Arabia. The following day, I was offered the opportunity to ride him. Without hesitation I agreed. Al-Afdal was as gentle and gracious as he was powerful and fast. What a precious experience!

The text comes from a 12th century Muslim manuscript about the horse.

A photogravure print is made by a labour intensive, manual process that dates back to the late 1800s. The photographic image is etched onto a metal plate which is inked and polished by hand, and then placed in contact with a sheet of fine art paper and 'pulled' through a traditional etching press. The result is an exquisite photographic print with beautiful depth and textural feel.

The combination of oil-based etching inks and 100% acid-free art paper that I use gives these photogravures the longest lifespan of any photographic print.
