THE EDGE OF FOREVER

Kitab Al-Filaha & La Alpujarra

A beautifully crafted, hand-bound two-volume set, this project draws from Tariq Dajani’s time in the Alpujarra mountains of Granada, Spain (2012–2016) and explores the lesser-known agricultural legacy of the ancient Muslim civilisation of al-Andalus (Andalusia).

Inspired by Kitāb al-Filāḥa (The Book of Agriculture), a 12th-century treatise by Ibn al-‘Awwām al-Ishbili, Dajani explores this history through abstract still-life compositions and moody landscapes. His work reflects the influence of Spanish masters like Cotán, Velázquez, Zurbarán, and Goya, as well as the atmospheric photography of José Ortiz-Echagüe.

Presented as a boxed, two-volume set, bilingual in English and Spanish, spanning 36 pages with 25 monochrome photographic plates, the books includes an essay, an abstract narrative, some Arabic excerpts of the original script in the Andalusi calligraphy of the period.
Printed as a first edition of 100 copies with an additional 10 artist proofs.

Published in 2017, by Envisage Books.

ZEITOUN

Ancients of time, guardians of memory

In this elegantly crafted volume from Tariq Dajani’s project of the same name, the artist invites us to reflect on our connection to the ancient Rumi olive trees of the Levant (Bilad al-Sham). These millennia-old beings, some dating back to Biblical times, stand among us as silent witnesses to history. With their gnarled and twisted trunks, these ancient trees stand silently, steadfastly, like venerable sentinels guarding memory and echoing the passage of time. They are our elders, binding communities together and anchoring us to the past.

Zeitoun, the Arabic word for “olive”, presents a series of striking, visceral images, capturing surreal landscapes in vivid hues alongside moody, hand-crafted photogravure (intaglio) prints. These works evoke a spectrum of emotions, from awe and reverence to sorrow and shadow.

“If the olive tree remembered who planted it, its oil would become tears.” ~ Mahmoud Darwish
